Both yarns blend the same two fibres. The difference is which one dominates. PC yarn is polyester-dominant. CVC yarn is cotton-dominant, and the name says so: CVC stands for Chief Value Cotton, meaning cotton is the majority of the blend by value. That is a definition, not a quality grade, and it is worth being clear about because the two are often discussed as though CVC were simply the better product.
The notation trap, before anything else
This causes more disputed orders than any other point on this page, so it comes first.
A 65/35 PC yarn is 65 percent polyester and 35 percent cotton. A 65/35 CVC yarn is 65 percent cotton and 35 percent polyester. The same two numbers describe opposite fabrics, because the convention puts the dominant fibre first and the dominant fibre is what distinguishes the two yarn types in the first place.
If you take one thing from this guide: never write a blend as bare numbers. Write "65% polyester / 35% cotton". It costs four extra words and removes the ambiguity entirely.
What PC yarn is
PC is polyester-cotton with polyester in the majority. The most widely used ratio, and our standard, is 65 percent polyester to 35 percent cotton. The polyester carries the strength and shape retention while the cotton keeps the fabric from feeling entirely synthetic.
It is the workhorse blend. Fabrics hold their shape, resist shrinkage, dry quickly and survive institutional laundering, which is why it dominates workwear and uniforms. It is also the cheaper of the two, because polyester staple generally costs less than cotton and does not carry cotton's price volatility.
What CVC yarn is
CVC puts cotton in the majority, commonly 60 percent cotton to 40 percent polyester. The cotton dominates the handle and breathability, and the polyester is there to add durability and reduce shrinkage relative to pure cotton.
It is the compromise blend for retail apparel: closer to cotton in feel and comfort, but noticeably more stable through washing than a 100 percent cotton fabric. If the garment is sold on comfort but has to survive domestic laundry, CVC is usually the answer.

How the blend shows in wear
- Moisture. Cotton absorbs, polyester wicks. A higher cotton share feels more comfortable in heat; a higher polyester share dries faster after washing.
- Shape. Polyester returns to shape. Collars and cuffs on a high-polyester fabric stay presentable longer through repeated laundering.
- Pilling. Polyester fibres are strong enough to hold pills on the surface rather than shedding them, so a high-polyester fabric can look pilled sooner even while it is structurally fine.
- Colour. Because the two fibres take different dye classes, shade matching across separate lots takes more care on blends than on pure cotton. Approve a lab dip against the exact blend you are ordering.
Which blend for which garment
- Workwear, uniforms, hospitality and healthcare: PC. Institutional laundering is punishing and shape retention matters more than handle.
- Activewear and fleece: PC. Quick drying and dimensional stability are the point.
- Retail T-shirts, polos and hoodies: CVC. The customer judges it on feel.
- Fashion basics sold on comfort: CVC, or consider combed cotton if you can carry the cost and the shrinkage.
- High-volume promotional garments: PC, on cost.
Specifying a blend when you order
Give four things and there is nothing left to misread: the fibres written out with their percentages, the count, the quality (carded or combed), and the end use. The last one lets us flag a mismatch before it becomes fabric.
