CVC fabric is any knitted or woven cloth made from CVC yarn — a blend of cotton and polyester in which cotton is the larger share. That is the whole definition. Everything else people attribute to CVC follows from that one ratio, and most of the confusion around the term comes from treating it as a grade of quality rather than a description of what is in the yarn.

Where the name comes from
CVC is an abbreviation of Chief Value Cotton. The phrase originates in trade classification, where the "chief value" fibre in a blended textile is the one that makes up the greatest share of its value. In everyday mill and buyer usage the term has drifted slightly, and CVC is now used broadly to mean a polyester-cotton yarn or fabric that is cotton-majority.
Two things follow from that, and both matter commercially. First, CVC is not a premium tier of PC. They are two names for opposite sides of the same blend family, and neither is inherently better. Second, because the term has a customs lineage, the exact classification treatment of a blended fabric depends on the tariff rules of the importing country and on the actual fibre percentages on the declaration — not on the word "CVC" appearing in your paperwork. Confirm classification with your customs broker rather than inferring it from the trade name.
The ratio trap, which costs real money
This is the single most common cause of a disputed blended-yarn order, so it is worth stating plainly.
The convention is that the dominant fibre is written first. So a 60/40 CVC is 60 percent cotton and 40 percent polyester, while a 65/35 PC is 65 percent polyester and 35 percent cotton. The same style of notation describes two very different fabrics, and a buyer who reads "60/40" without knowing which blend family it belongs to has a roughly even chance of receiving the opposite of what they pictured.
The fix costs four words: write the fibres out in full. "60% cotton / 40% polyester" cannot be misread by a mill, a merchandiser or a lab, and it survives being copied between an email, a purchase order and a shipping document.
How CVC fabric behaves
A blended fabric inherits properties from both fibres roughly in proportion to how much of each is present, moderated by construction and finishing. Cotton brings absorbency, breathability and a soft, matte handle. Polyester brings tensile strength, dimensional stability and fast drying. A cotton-majority blend therefore reads as a cotton fabric that has been made more stable and more durable, rather than as a synthetic fabric that has been softened.

The pilling row is the one buyers are most often surprised by. Polyester filaments are stronger than cotton, so when surface fibres work loose and ball up, a polyester-containing blend tends to hold the pill against the surface where a pure cotton fabric would shed it. That is why a blend can look worse after twenty washes than a cotton fabric that has actually lost more fibre. Combed yarn, tighter twist and a proper singeing or bio-polish finish all reduce it.
Why dyeing matters more than buyers expect
Cotton and polyester do not accept the same dyes. Cotton is typically dyed with reactive dyes in a relatively mild bath; polyester needs disperse dyes and considerably higher temperature and pressure. A blended fabric therefore usually goes through two dyeing stages, plus a reduction-clearing step to strip disperse dye that has stained the cotton.
The practical consequences: blended dyeing costs more and takes longer than dyeing either fibre alone; deep and precisely matched shades are harder to hit consistently; and a shade approved on one lot can drift on the next if the blend ratio drifts. If colour matching is critical to your programme, lock the blend ratio in the specification and ask for lab dips against a physical standard rather than a digital reference.
Where CVC fabric is normally used
- Mid-weight and heavy jersey for T-shirts where a cotton hand is wanted but shrinkage has to stay controlled across a size run.
- Fleece and terry for hoodies and sweatshirts, where the cotton majority keeps the brushed face soft while the polyester limits the garment growing or twisting after wash.
- Polo piqué, where dimensional stability across the placket and collar matters and pure cotton tends to move.
- Uniforms and corporate wear that need a natural look and feel but face frequent institutional laundering.
- Woven shirting and light workwear, where wrinkle recovery has real day-to-day value to the wearer.
The pattern across all of these: CVC is chosen where the garment has to *look and feel* like cotton but has to *survive* like a blend. Where either requirement alone dominates, the pure fibre or the polyester-dominant blend is usually the better and cheaper answer.
CVC or 100% cotton?
Choose 100% cotton when next-to-skin comfort, maximum breathability or a fully natural-fibre claim is the point of the product, and when you can absorb the shrinkage in your pattern and your grading. Premium tees, infant wear and anything marketed on natural content belong here.
Choose CVC when the garment will be washed hard and often, when consistent measurements after wash matter more than the last few percent of softness, or when cotton's price volatility is a problem for a programme you have to price months ahead. Fleece, uniforms and any high-turn basic are the usual cases.
If the answer is genuinely unclear, it is almost always cheaper to knit a small trial in both and wash-test them than to argue it in a specification meeting. Fibre behaviour is consistent, but how it lands in *your* construction at *your* GSM is not something a table can settle.
How to specify CVC when you order
A specification that removes ambiguity has six things in it. Missing any one of them is what turns into a claim later.
- Blend, written out in full — "60% cotton / 40% polyester", never "60/40".
- Count and ply in Ne, for example Ne 30/1. See yarn count Ne explained if the notation is unfamiliar.
- Carded or combed, which sets the cleanliness and evenness of the yarn and is covered in combed vs carded cotton yarn.
- Spinning system — ring-spun, compact or open-end — because it changes strength and surface far more than most buyers expect.
- Yarn form — greige or dyed, on cones or in hanks — and the intended dyeing route.
- End use and target fabric weight, so the mill can flag a mismatch before it becomes a production run.
