The short answer: combed yarn has been through an extra process that removes the short fibres, which makes it smoother, stronger and more resistant to pilling, and more expensive. Carded yarn skips that step. It costs less and is entirely adequate for a large share of everyday production.
Most writing on this question is aimed at clothing brands and treats combed as simply the better product. It is not. It is the better product for some fabrics and a waste of money on others, and the useful question is which of those describes what you are making.
What carding does
Carding is the cleaning and aligning stage. Raw cotton is opened, impurities and tangles are pulled out, and the fibres are drawn into a loose rope called a sliver, roughly parallel and ready to be spun.
What carding does not do is sort fibres by length. Short fibres stay in the mix alongside long ones. They spin perfectly well, but they have fewer points of contact holding them in the yarn, so over time and with friction they work their way to the surface.
What combing adds
Combing is an additional stage after carding. It removes the shortest fibres and any remaining neps, and leaves the longer fibres more thoroughly parallel. What comes out is a cleaner, more uniform sliver made almost entirely of long-staple fibre.
The removed material is called noil, and it is not a small quantity. Mills typically lose somewhere in the region of 10 to 20 percent of the fibre weight at this stage, and the noil sells for considerably less than what went in. That loss, plus the extra machine time, is most of the price difference. You are not paying for a marketing grade, you are paying for the cotton that got taken out.

How the difference shows in the finished fabric
On the roll, the two can look closer than you expect. The difference shows up in three places, and all of them are after the fabric has been made.
- Handle. Combed fabric feels smoother straight away. On a fine single jersey next to the skin, this is obvious.
- Appearance after wear. This is the big one. Carded fabric develops surface pills sooner, because the short fibres that cause them are still in the yarn.
- Print and dye clarity. A smoother, more even yarn takes fine prints more cleanly, which matters on light shades and detailed artwork.
If your garment is judged after twenty washes rather than on the shelf, combed usually justifies itself. If it is a promotional run or a heavily brushed fabric where the surface is disturbed anyway, it often does not.
Which fabrics are made from combed yarn
Buyers often look for combed yarn fabric rather than for the yarn itself, so it is worth naming the constructions it actually turns up in. In knits: fine single jersey, interlock and rib, which is where premium T-shirts, polos and underwear come from. In wovens: poplin, fine shirting and lawn, where an even surface is most of what the fabric is being bought for.
Coarser constructions rarely justify it. Fleece, terry, towelling and heavy canvas are usually carded, because brushing, looping or sheer weight dominates the surface and the combing premium buys a difference nobody ends up handling.
Identifying it is easier by hand than on paper. At the same count and construction, combed yarn fabric shows less surface hair, a more even face and a cleaner handle. Held up to the light, the loops or the weave read as more regular, because the yarn feeding them varies less along its length.
When you order, specify it at yarn level rather than by describing the fabric you want. State the count, the ply, and the word combed or carded explicitly, along with ring-spun or compact. A fabric described only as "premium cotton" leaves the choice to the mill, and mills decide on cost.
Which to choose, by product
- Premium T-shirts and polos, fine single jersey, anything worn against the skin: combed. Smoothness and pilling resistance are the product.
- Everyday tees, promotional garments, high-volume basics on a tight cost line: carded is usually the right commercial call.
- Fleece, terry and brushed fabrics: carded is often sufficient, since brushing raises the surface deliberately.
- Home textiles and towelling: carded, in most cases. Absorbency and bulk matter more than surface smoothness.
- Fine counts, roughly Ne 30s and above: combed in practice. Short fibres cause too many breaks to spin fine yarn reliably.
Why buyers source cotton yarn from Pakistan
Most of the combed and carded cotton yarn moving through export markets is spun in a handful of countries, and Pakistan is one of the largest. The reason is structural rather than promotional: the cotton is grown domestically, the spinning capacity sits close to the crop, and the fibre-to-yarn chain is short enough that a buyer is not paying for raw cotton to cross a border before it is spun.
For the combed-or-carded decision specifically, that has one useful consequence. Both qualities are spun here at volume, so the premium on combed reflects the fibre loss described above and little else. Where combed capacity is scarce, the same decision picks up a scarcity premium on top of the material cost.
The honest caveat is that capability varies a great deal between mills. Fine combed counts, compact spinning and consistent shade across repeat lots are not universal, and the gap between a mill that holds your specification order after order and one that does not is the largest single risk in sourcing.
